You are waking from a stupor that feels like a chronic hangover after a week in Vegas. There is a throbbing bump on the back of your head. You notice your right palm is covered with dried blood, but you neither see nor feel any open wounds on your body. On your left forearm you feel a sharp pain under the shirt sleeve. Rolling up the sleeve, you discover what looks like a fresh needle mark. You wonder if you have been injected with something. Then you realize you can't remember who you are!

As you come out of the fog you are able to make out your surroundings. You have no idea where you are and why you're here. You have no memory... WHATSOEVER!

You find yourself in the bathroom of Joe's Bar. Take the trenchcoat and the .38 revolver. In the pockets of the trenchcoat you will find some change and a wallet, containing a key, a plastic card, and a 20$ bill.
Go to the Bar and climb the stairs to the first floor. Notice the pictures of some boxers on the wall: you seem to be one of them, "Ace". Enter the office.
Open the drawer and you'll find an envelope containing a medical bill from Dr. Brody, 934 West Sherman, for a prescription for drugs. Unlock the door with the key and enter the room. Search the corpse that lies on the desk and take the Mercedes car key. Open the desk and take the key and the pencil. Exit the room through the window and climb the fire escape ladder to the second floor.
Enter the window and you'll be inside the room where probably they tied and drugged you. The drug bottles on the shelf match those in Dr. Brody's prescription. In the trashcan you'll find a syringe: take it.
Go back to the Bar at the ground floor via the same path and go down in the cellar. In the wine rack, all bottles except one are covered with dust; press the one that's clean. The rack slides, revealing a secret passage. Go to the left to the clandestine Casino. Insert coins into the slot-machine and play until you win the jackpot.
Go back again to the Bar, unlock the front door and exit into the street.

On the street you risk meeting some characters. Ignore the beggar, and punch the broad if she annoys you. The mugger must be dealt with more carefully: punch him to knock him out but he'll eventually return after a while. You can hit him four times, after which you'll have to give him your 20$ bill or he'll shoot you.
Open the Mercedes parked in the front of Joe's Bar with the car key and enter it. Open the glove compartment and pick up the map. You'll also find there a car registration form in the name of Joey Siegel, 1212 West End St.
Get out of the car before the police comes and go to the left. If you want, you can purchase here a newspaper with the news of the Japanese bombing Pearl Harbor. Continue to the left and take a taxi cab. Tell the driver Joey Siegel's address, pay three quarters and exit the cab.

Enter the elevator in the lobby, and insert the plastic card in the slot to use the elevator which will bring you to Joey Siegel's penthouse. On the fireplace in the penthouse there is a photo of a young woman, M.V., with her address: 520 South Kedzie. Leave the building, take the taxi and go to that address.

Once at 520 South Kedzie, shoot the door to blow up the lock, and enter the house. Open the desk drawer and take M.V.'s diary and the small key. The diary tells about her liaison with some Mr. Sternwood. Note the piece of paper on the table: there is a number combination written on it, 33-24-36.
Exit the house, take the taxi and go to Dr. Brody's address.

Enter the building hall and go straight for Dr. Brody's office. Unlock the door with the small key and enter. Fire a bullet at the cabinet lock and open it. Reading the files you can discover interesting information regarding the drug you've been injected with (Dietanol Thimene) and that made you lose your memory, as well as its antidote (Bisodumitis). Find a bottle of Bisodumitis on the medicine cabinet and fill the syringe with its content. Inject yourself the syringe.
The drug starts its effect and from now on you'll experience frequent flashbacks. Also, examining again several objects you've already examined will provide you with new information because you've started to remember. By looking at the map found in the Mercedes you now remember the address of Joe's Bar: 1060 South Peoria Street.
Take a bottle of Sodium Pentathol from the medicine cabinet and leave the office. Go back to the hall and climb to the first floor where you'll find yourself in front of the office of Detective Ace Harding, which appears to be you.
Shoot the shadow behind the glass door to eliminate the thug waiting for you. Unlock the door with the small key and enter the office. Reload your gun with the ammo you'll find in the desk drawers. Read the files in your file cabinet to get some other useful information, then take the taxi back to Joe's Bar.

Enter Joe's Bar from the front door and go to the office at first floor. Open the safe with the combination you now know, open the small box and take the key. Leave the office and pay another visit to the Mercedes parked in front.
Go to the rear of the car and open the trunk with the key you just found: a woman is inside, tied and gagged. You recognize her as Mrs. Sternwood. Remove the gag and inject her a dose of Sodium Pentathol: she'll tell you her home address, 626 Auburn Road.

Use a cab to go to the address Mrs. Sternwood mentioned. Once in front of the house, open the mailbox and take the ransom letter. Head for the house and knock at the door with the knocker. A butler will open the door but, since he'll refuse to let you in, you'll need to strike him.
Climb the stairs and go to the bedroom to your left where you find M.V. sleeping. Open the drawer and take the notepad. Rub your pencil on the notepad and you'll be able to read what was written on the top sheet. Go to the adjacent bedroom, open the drawer and take the letter.
Now everything is clear: Mr. Sternwood and M.V. arranged the kidnapping of Mrs. Sternwood and the murder of Joey Siegel, and tried to frame you.
Leave the house and take the cab to go to Joe's Bar for the last time.

Enter Joe's Bar from the front door, go to the cellar and down to the sewer. Walk around in the sewer and go down as much as possible. If you happen to encounter an alligator, fire a bullet at it before it attacks you. Once you've reached the bottom of the sewer, you'll notice a whirlpool. Throw your revolver there as it's the weapon used to murder Joey Siegel and you need to get rid of it.
Exit the sewer, exit Joe's Bar and go right to the Police Station.

A trial follows and, with the evidence you collected, Mr. Sternwood and M.V. are found guilty and sent to jail.
